Backend services are in essence the actual infrastructure functionality. They run on the systems that are in the infrastructure and typically include a directory system (i.e. Active Directory) and applications like groupware (i.e. Microsoft Exchange Server), databases, webservices, file and print servers, etc. A pro-active monitoring system helps to keep the infrastructure healthy, well-performing and highly available.
