Windows 7 Issues

Posted by: hbr in Untagged  on Print

I've been working with Windows 7 since the first beta was released and since that first beta, it's been working much better than Vista ever did on my laptop.

But there are some issues. This list describes what I encountered and how it can be solved. I run 64bit because I have 4GB ram.

VMware vSphere Client won't run properly.

get  the system.dll from dotNet 2.0 and follow instructions here.

Connecting to a WebDAV share (like Sharepoint) is terribly slow.

very tricky problem. What helps is to reset the internet explorer settings or sometimes even simpler: uncheck the 'Automatically Detect Settings' from the Proxy settings in IE. That last one fixed my issues (go figure)..

Live Messenger minimizes to Taskbar

It takes some getting used to but the new taskbar is very helpful. Messenger however doesn't get it. you need to set the compatibility mode to Vista for the .exe file for messenger to minimize properly to the taskbar Icon area.

Desktop Icons get mixed up switch resolutions

This is an ancient issue and it's gotten better but sometimes icons get automatically aligned when you switch resolution for say a Powerpoint presentation. I use a small tool from midi-ox that is able to save an restore your icon layout for every resolution separately.

Virtual CD-Rom drives

There are a lot of those out there. Most didn't initially work with Windows 7. I use a small one called Magic-Disc that's fast and easy to use and has no superfluous extras, is small, free and works like a charm.

Connecting to a shared printer

When connecting to a network printer that's shared on Windows XP, the driver installation will fail. To fix this, use an old trick. Install a local printer with the correct driver on LPT1: or something. Then change the properties and add a new Local Port with a name like \\HOST\PRINTERSHARE.
